Last Sunday, Lucy developed this encysted infection over her right eye. It looks kind of like a pink marble or a third eye from a science fiction movie from the late 80s/early 90s.
We have been to the vet, who prescribed antibiotics and an ointment, neither of which has worked very well. The best thing has been warm compresses, which Lucy tolerates for about 45 seconds. The swelling has gone down a bit and a very tiny hole has opened up, but not big enough for it to drain. So tomorrow she is going in and have it opened up, under anesthetic. I will drop her off at 7:30 in the morning and probably pick her up in the very late afternoon.
The best case scenario is that there is something in there (like a bee stinger or bug or a seed of some kind, though I am pretty fastidious about seeds, like foxtails and such) that is causing the infection. In which case, the object just needs to be removed, the site drained and flushed and sown up. If there isn’t anything in there, then the doc is going to take a culture and send it to the lab to find out what the infection is and what antibiotics will best treat it. In either case, Lucy will have to wear the cone of shame for a while.
Wish us luck.
